Madikeri: Despite city municipality collecting garbage from all corners in Madikeri, it is being dumped in an open place at Stone Hill. Hence, the residents of surrounding areas have been living amid foul odour and an imminent danger of contracting infections.

What’s astonishing is that though there are no any shortcomings in the system of garbage collection and the workers concerned have been doing their jobs properly. The problem lies in the dumping of garbage. All the collected garbage is being dumped at a place called Stone Hill which is emanating bad smell. As the garbage collected has not been disposed off in a systematic and scientific manner, the residents of the surrounding areas are apprehensive about contracting diseases.

As the municipality collects garbage from every house and commercial establishments, each family needs to pay Rs 180 and Rs 360 should be paid by the commercial complexes. This cess is being collected by the municipality every year. However, the municipality has not taken any measures for scientific disposal of waste so far.

The segregation of waste is being done while workers collect garbage from door to door, But, garbage is being dumped without segregation. Though the municipality had purchased machines to dispose off the garbage collected, some technical problems prevented it from using those machines. However, neither the elected representatives nor the officials of the municipality have rectified the problems.

Water tank near dumping yard

To add to the woes, the water tank which provides drinking water to the whole city is also located in the same place. The adjacent areas like Subramanya Nagar, where a police quarters is situated, is now turning into a breeding ground flies and mosquitoes due to reckless dumping of waste. The residents here say that though they have been complaining about this problem since long, no any measures have been taken so far.

Despite union government’s “Swacch Bharat” campaign having gained popularity and momentum in many areas, a tourist place like Madikeri has failed to adopt a scientific waste management system till date.
