Madikeri: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has changed the red alert sounded on Friday in Kodagu to an orange alert foreseeing a reduction in the intensity of the rains. Following a forecast of 115 mm to 204 mm rain, the district administration has asked the residents and tourists to be alert.

Unlike yesterday’s forecast, none of the areas in the district received heavy rainfall. The rain was normal throughout the day and increased a bit in the evening on Saturday, July 20. In Talakaveri and Bagamandala surroundings, it has rained from 2 to 3 inches in the past one day. Normal rainfall has been reported in Napoklu, Moornadu and Siddapura areas.

A tree was uprooted in Thitimati of Virajpet taluk disrupting vehicular traffic for almost an hour.

Landslides have been reported in some parts of the district including the vicinity of the SP quarters on city’s Raja Seat road. People living on the top and foothills of Raja Seat are living under the constant fear of landslides. The temperature has also dipped leading to extreme cold weather around the Madikeri district centre. Good rains have been reported from Somwarpet and Virajpet taluks.

Meanwhile, the alerts by the meteorological department have not stopped tourists from flocking the district because of the greenery and cold weather.
