Madikeri: In the wake of complaints against jeep drivers fleecing tourists and harassing villagers, the Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu has instructed the concerned departmental officials to take action against erring people.
The Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu, Dr. Richard Vincent D’Souza during a meeting instructed the Road Transport Officer (RTO) to conduct frequent checks to assess the situation and ensure that jeep drivers adhere to rules and regulations laid down by the transport authority.
At the same time he instructed Galibeedu Panchyath development officer to station two men in uniform at the sensitive areas where jeeps are parked to ferry tourists to cut down illegal activities.
He also asked the Zilla Panchayath CEO officials to submit a proposal to improve the road infrastructure in the area so that financial allocation may be made. The tourism department officials were also asked to provide basic facilities at important locations and ensure tourist security.
It may be recalled that the villagers from the area had made several allegations against the jeep drivers and had highlighted other problems arising out of vehicle moment due to excess tourists’ inflow during the peak season.
