Madikeri: Kodagu district ‘Mahilodhaya Mahila Okkoota’ staged a protest condemning the murder of Sandhya, a student from Siddapur, by some immigrant labourers.

The members from the federation gathered in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office and demanded death penalty to the culprits responsible for Sandhya’s murder.

Speaking during the protest, District Sector Coordinator Joyce Menezes said that though there have been a lot of protests regarding the murder of the student, the family of the deceased is still awaiting justice. “The culprits should be hanged to death to put a stop on such incidents,” she said.

“Tensions have been flaring due to the entry of immigrants from Assam and Bengal into the district. Plantation and estate owners should throw away immigrant labourers and employ local labourers,” she added.

“It is high time the government realised the possible problems that could crop up due to immigrant labourers. Committees should be formed in gram panchayat schools and colleges to create awareness among the students regarding the potential dangers they might have to face and how to overcome such situations,” said Joyce.

Mahilodhaya Mahila Okkoota District President Pushpa, Secretary Leena Lobo, Vijay Narayan, Jayanthi, Mary, Polibetta Mahila Okkoota members Nalini and Meena Kumari were present among many others during the protest.
