Madikeri: With a view to ensure public participation in maintenance of law and order as well as in regulating traffic, the Kodagu District Police Department has now decided to appoint traffic wardens. Prasanna V Raju, the enthusiastic DySP of Kodagu has said members of the general public interested in volunteering as traffic wardens to assist the cops in regulating traffic can come forward to take up the job.
Speaking to reporters here, Prasanna Raju said the chaotic parking arrangements in the town of Madikeri which has led to traffic problems, has been posing a big challenge to the Police Department which is also facing shortage of staff. He said the system of appointing traffic wardens is implemented in Mysore successfully and taking cue from the same it has been decided to implement the same in Madikeri.
He said retired police personnel as well as ex-servicemen who do not expect any returns for their service will be appointed for the post. They will be provided separate uniforms and ID cards and should serve for a minimum three hours a day.
If the Madikeri experiment proves a success, then the scheme will be implemented in other parts of the district, he added.
Prasanna Raju also stated that the department was also planning to use the service of NCC students for the task. Awareness programmes on traffic rules will also be held at all schools and colleges, he informed.
