Madikeri: In a bid to control the man-animal conflict, the forest department officials are busy fixing radio collars on wild elephants in the Kodagu district.

Last week, two wild elephants were strapped with radio collars in an operation carried out in the Virajapete area. On March 27, the officials were successful in strapping the third wild elephant with radio collar with the help of a team of trained elephants in the Kushalnagar forest subdivision.

In recent times, a herd of around 18 elephants is roaming around in the Kushalnagar subdivision. Many a times, the forest officials had to chase them away from the estates in the area. To know the exact location of the herd, a female elephant was tagged with a radio collar. Now, movements of the elephants can be easily traced anytime.

Madikeri Deputy Conservator of Forests Manjunath, Somwarpet subdivision Assistant Conservator of Forest M S Chinnappa and Hunsur Wildlife Division veternarian Dr. Mujeeb participated in the operation.

The forest officials are also planning to fix radio collar on elephant of another herd roaming in the region.
