Youth from Karwar stranded in quarantined ‘Diamond Princess’ cruise returns home

Karwar: A holiday of a lifetime had turned into a nightmare for many passengers on board the Diamond Princess Cruise ship that was put in quarantine in Yokohama, Japan in early February after a man who disembarked in Hong Kong was found to have the Coronavirus.

After several weeks of battling fear and apprehensions in the quarantined ship, Abhishekh Karwarkar from Karwar, who was on board the same ship as a crew member has returned to his homeland.

He had reached New Delhi about 15 days ago. After medical checks and after being quarantined for two weeks, he was pronounced to be fit to travel back to his home.

Though Abhishek was not available for comments, his family expressed happiness that he has returned. Abhishek was not tested positive for Corona Virus, said the members of his family.

On February 26, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar had informed that Air India flight had landed in Delhi from Tokyo, carrying 119 Indians and five nationals from Sri Lanka, Nepal, South Africa and Peru who were quarantined onboard the quarantined ship.

The ship was put under quarantine by Government of Japan on 5th February for 14 days until 19th February.

The quarantine period was extended by the Government of Japan as the crew members were performing their regular duties during the initial quarantine period of 14 days.
