Karwar: A giant whale shark was caught in the fisherman’s trap on Friday in the Gokarna Tadar Harbor of the Kumta taluk in the Uttara Kannada district.
The fish was found by the fishermen in the Arabian Sea, weighing over 800 kg and 9 feet in length.
It is considered a crime to hunt and use it for food. A large number of fish have been returned to the sea due to wildlife protection.
They are mostly found in the Gujarat Sea and in the Arabian Sea. However, it has been very rarely seen lately.
“The government has taken steps to conserve these,” said Dr. Shivakumar of the Center for Marine Science. It is also one of the largest fish in the world, growing to the size of a bus, he added.
