Karwar: Close on the heels of media reporting the hard-luck story of a village named Medini in Kumta taluk of Uttara Karnataka, Infosys Foundation Chairman Sudha Murthy has come forward to build a road to the village.

Addressing an event in Bengaluru on Thursday, Sudha Murthy, who was sharing the dais with Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy sought the permission from the CM to carry out the project, to which the CM responded positively and promised to extend all support.

Medini, a small village with a population of 800 people is well-known for producing a fragrant variety of rice known as ‘Medini rice’.

However, deprived of basic facilities such as roads, electricity etc, the villagers were left in a lurch. It is said that even the young men in the village were not getting married as the families of the girls have been rejecting the boys because of the plight of the village.

Those wanting to reach Medini will have to walk eight kms through thick, dense forest. Mud roads get murky in rainy season, cutting off the village for several months from the outside world.

Finally, the plight of the village has caught the attention of the CM and on Friday, as per instructions of the CM, Uttara Karnataka Deputy Commissioner Dr Harish Kumar visited the village and took stock of the situation.

He said that road to the village and ration card distriubution will be taken up on priority basis.

Zilla Panchayat CEO M Roshan among others accompanied the DC.
