Impeded by blocked roads, villagers carry sick, aged in sarees

Joida: Even 10 days after the floods hit the state, government agencies have not been able to restore minimum basic infrastructure in the rural areas. The best example for this is the Nagari village in the Joida taluk of the Uttara Kannada district. Residents of this village have been forced to carry patients, senior citizens and pregnant women using saree, as the only road connecting the village to the rest of the world is blocked.

According to the locals, ten days ago the Nagari-Teremale road was blocked after a tree fell on the road and since then, none of the government agencies has been bothered to clear the blockage. As a result, vehicular movement has been restricted, causing a major inconvenience to the villagers.

The locals say that they lodged a complaint with the Gram Panchayat seeking help to remove the tree, however, the Panchayat authorities passed the buck to the forest department.

“The villagers have been demanding the development of the road for past 20 years but no action has been taken so far,” said Prabhakar Desai, a local resident.
