Karwar: Four cyber offenders, who had connections with Nigerian citizens, involved in cybercrime and swindling people of money by promising jobs in the US were arrested by CEN police in Bengaluru. With this, a huge cybercrime racket operating in this region has been unearthed.
The racket was unearthed when a girl from Honnavar has swindled off Rs 57 lac against the promise of providing a job in the US. Speaking to media persons, SP Shivaprakash Devaraju said that the miscreants have been identified as Ashoknarayan Swamy (26) from Kolar, Naginar Halam (25) from Bulia, Assam, Darati Nabir Halam (28) from Tripura and Voringam (30) from Manipur.
After freezing miscreants bank accounts over Rs 2.6 lakhs have been recovered apart from Rs 24,000 in cash. Assests including swipe machine, finger print thumb machine, 24 ATM cards, 23 mobile phones, 17 sims, tab, two pendrives, one dongle and one wifi router ave been recovered. It has been found out that the racket used 34 bank accounts of various banks.
The girl was asked to deposit over Rs. 57 lakh between August 2020 and January 17 2021 in bank accounts at Karnataka, Tripura, Assam, Tamilnadu, Manipur, Gujarat and Dehi. She was contacted through e-mail. Girl identified as Netravathi Gowda post this lodged a complaint on February 10 at Karwar CEN Crime department police station.
Police is investigating further and are suspecting a huge racket involving people from Assam as well as Nigeria. As the accused have used over 125 mobile numbers and as many sims to undertake the crime, the said digital evidences are being looked into.
