Karwar: As many as 28 fishermen sailing off the coast of the Nethrani island were rescued from a sinking boat. The incident occurred in Bhatkal of the Uttara Kannada district.

It is learnt that the fishing boat “Mookambika”, owned by Madhukar Poojary of Gangolli in the Kundapur taluk, was sailing 45 km off Bhaktkal’s coast when the lower part of the hull broke, causing the boat to start sinking.

The crew of another fishing vessel sailing nearby saw that the Mookambika was in distress and immediately rushed to their rescue. They tied the sinking vessel to their own and called another fishing vessel to help.

Together, the two fishing boats pulled the distressed Mookambika to safety, thereby avoiding a major disaster and loss of life.
