Lucknow: Two Uttar Pradesh policemen have been charged with attempted murder after a video of them thrashing a motorist went viral on social media.
The victim has been identified as Rinku Pandey, while the two cops in the video are Head Constable Mahendra Prasad and Sub-Inspector Virendra Mishra.
The video shows the two policemen dragging and thrashing a young man after an argument broke out over a challan that was issued to the victim for violating traffic rules.
However, the police department said that the man was drunk even though he was not given a breathalyser test.
Commenting on the incident, senior police officer Dr Dharm Veer Singh said, “It is being said that he was drunk. The two policemen beat him up badly, pushed him to the ground and behaved badly with him. Both of them were in uniform. It is disgraceful to the police department.”
The footage also shows the man’s little niece trying to stop the policemen as they continue kicking him and pulling his hair. The child is also said to have injured her hand in the incident.
A departmental probe has been ordered against the two cops seen in the viral video.
