Chennai: Three people were arrested by the Tamil Nadu police for operating a duplicate State Bank of India (SBI) branch in Panruti of the Cuddalore district.

One of the arrested accused has been identified as Kamal Babu, the 19-year-old son of a former SBI employee. According to the police, he brought computers, lockers, challans, forged documents and other items in order to set up the fake branch. The branch, Panruti Bazaar Branch even had a website.

The other arrested accused are A Kumar (42) and M Manickam (52) who opened the branch with Kamal in April. As this was during the lockdown, they assumed that they would not be caught.

The fake branch drew the attention of the authorities when one of the customers asked about the new branch with the manager of an existing branch in the town.

A complaint was lodged with the Panruti police and the three were arrested under sections 473, 469, 484 and 109 of the IPC.
