Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala officials on Wednesday refuted news about 35 migrant workers, including many from Amethi, were stranded in Karuvarakundu in Malappuram district without food and ration items, and that Union Minister Smriti Irani had to come to their rescue.

An earlier report had pointed out that these workers got food and ration items due to the intervention of Irani, who is the BJP MP from Amethi, the erstwhile constituency of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

Police officials said the migrant workers were getting regular supplies of the state government and they were put up in a sound accommodation, which also has been provided for free by the building owner.

The local village council president also confirmed that the news that came in the media was totally baseless.

On Wednesday, Wayanad MP Gandhi’s office informed the media that he has made arrangements for supply of essential items to all the community kitchens in the local bodies (51 village councils and five municipalities) in his Lok Sabha constituency — 28,000 kg of rice and over 6,000 kg of pulses will reach all the local bodies by Thursday.

Gandhi has informed his local office here, he will be coming to his constituency the moment the lockdown is lifted, meanwhile he is in regular contact with all the district authorities.
