Delhi violence: Death toll now 25; PM Modi calls for ‘peace and harmony’

New Delhi: After violence broke Two days after violence broke out in Delhi when anti and pro CAA factions clashed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, February 26, called for “peace and harmony” in the national capital.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, PM Modi wrote, “Peace and harmony are central to our ethos. I appeal to my sisters and brothers of Delhi to maintain peace and brotherhood at all times. It is important that there is calm and normalcy is restored at the earliest.”

A few minutes before, the PM tweeted, “Had an extensive review on the situation prevailing in various parts of Delhi. Police and other agencies are working on the ground to ensure peace and normalcy.”

It can be noted that the Prime Minister’s call for peace came soon after AICC interim-president Sonia Gandhi blamed the BJP and the Central Government for spreading fear and hate which led to the violence. She also demanded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah resign from his post. The Delhi Police comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Meanwhile, as per the latest reports, the death toll in the aftermath of the violence has risen to 25, after three more people died on Wednesday.

“Three more died during treatment taking the death toll to 25. We hope that the toll does not increase further,” said Sunil Kumar, Medical Superintendent at the Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, according to a report by ANI.

So far, according to ANI, the Delhi Police have registered 18 FIRSs and as many as 106 people have been arrested in connection to the violence that broke out in the north-eastern region of Delhi.
