Mumbai: Despite making a controversial statement about thrashing Dalits, IPS officer Bhagyashree Navtake, has been awarded a posting as a Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO).
Bhagyashree who had allegedly spoken about thrashing Dalits was demoted. However, she was given the post of SDPO last month.
An enquiry against her is still on for making the controversial statement. According to sources from the police, the enquiry is nearing completion and a report will be out soon.
In the video clip a woman who appears to be Navtake is heard saying she had thrashed 21 Dalits who filed complaints under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act at her police stations. She is also heard saying that she has filed cases under Section 307 (Attempt to murder) of the IPC against Muslims, ostensibly, so that they are unable to procure bail easily.
However, senior officials of the police department say that the remarks she is purportedly seen making in a video were taken out of context and may have been made to placate members of the Maratha community.
