Patna: Bihar police chief Gupteshwar Pandey, who hit headlines in connection to the Sushant Singh Rajput case and for his ‘aukat’ taunt on Rhea Chakraborty has taken voluntary retirement.
As per sources, Pandey, 59 may join politics once he receives green signal from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Bihar is going to face polls in a few weeks and Pandey may contest as a candidate of the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) from Sahpur in Buxar district.
SK Singhal will take over as the new Director General of Police.
Pandey’s request for voluntary retirement was forwarded on Tuesday evening and was approved by the Bihar government.
Pandey was instrumental in Bihar government pressing for justice in the SSR case. The entire case took a political turn in Bihar with the Nitish Kumar government and the BJP claiming credit for CBI probe into the actor’s death case.
Pandey has always nurtured political aspirations and in 2009 he had requested early retirement to contest elections from Buxar Parliamentary segment.
However, his plans were foiled when the government did not accept his application and with intervention from Nitish Kumar, he was made to return to service.
