Hubballi: RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat has spoken about the ongoing row over demand for separate religious status to Lingayat in Karnataka and it is evident that RSS Supremo is against the separate religious tag for one of the castes that plays decisive roles in Karnataka state politics.

Speaking about the same, Bhagwat has told the Sangha workers to make sure that the Lingayat religious heads and leaders withdraw their demand for separate religion.

Addressing the North and South Karnataka Baitak in Hubballi on Saturday, Bhagwat said that there is need to bridge the gap and misunderstandings between the Lingayats and the Veerashaivas and ensure that they stay united. This, he said was necessary politically as well as socially.

A demand for separate religious status for Lingayat gained momentum recently in the state, but a confusion over the identity of the Lingayats and the Veerashaivas seems to be an impediment on the path to separate religionhood.

Meanwhile, the issue has gained political importance. The ruling Congress party, which fails to have a charismatic Lingayat leader onboard has played up the card well by evincing that it is for this demand. However, the BJP too is in consensus with the demand, specifically with Lingayat strongman being showcased as the next CM of the state. But, with the RSS talking out straight, one may have to wait and watch what stand the BJP will be taking in future.
