Hubballi: The northern Karnataka has seen a sharp increase in the number of farmers’ suicides. Thus the district police have set about the task of counselling farmers and instilling a sense of confidence in them.
The initiative comes on the heels of a massive crackdown by police on deceitful moneylenders charging high interest rates.
Speaking to a daily, Vamsi Krishna, superintendent of police, Dharwad informed that the police sub-inspector and beat constables will convene meetings of farmers in temples and other public places in villages of Dharwad, Hubballi, Navalgund, Kalghatagi and Kundagol taluks, and educate them about provisions of the Moneylenders Act and measures to be taken when facing harassment at the hands of moneylenders.
Vamsi Krishna, says the awareness programme has already got off the blocks in several villages, including Pudakalkatti, Uppinbetageri, Kotur, Annigeri, Gudageri, Garag and Tadkod, in the district.”
The police department hopes to widen the scope of its farmer-connect programme though street plays.
Earlier this week, Hassan police have also embarked upon an awareness drive across the district, educating people against falling into the debt trap.
