Haveri: Heavy rains wreaked havoc in Uttara Kannada district on Thursday while two persons lost their lives in rain-related incidents in North Karnataka.
As many as 300 people were shifted to safety from low-lying villages in Kumta taluk. River Aghanashini is in spate following heavy rains in the catchment areas.
Gruel centre has been opened in Diwagi village. However, there have been no reports of casualties. Kumta received 106.8 mm of rain on Thursday.
Several villages in Sirsi taluk are without power and road connectivity. The water level in River Varada has increased in Banavasi. Mogalli-Bhasi road is under water affecting movement of vehicles.
More than 1,000 acres of paddy fields are under water for the past eight days. Incessant rains have been lashing Bhatkal for the past two days inundating roads and farmlands.
A majority of the water bodies in Haliyal have filled with the taluk receiving 82.8 mm of rain on Thursday. Farming activities have gained momentum following copious rains.
A 25-year-old youth was washed away in a pond in Mynalli village of Mundagod taluk. Dundu alias Rongu Dhoolu Gavade went to rescue a buffalo which was stuck in the pond, but was washed away in the gushing waters.
Haveri
A woman and her two-year-old daughter were killed after the roof of a house collapsed in Ranebennur of Haveri district. The deceased have been identified as Rasool Bi Jafarsab Belavigi (45) and Fathimabi, residents of AKG?Colony. The ceiling of the house had weakened due to nonstop rains. Tahsildar K?Shivalingu,who visited the spot, said that an ex gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh each would be paid to the family of the deceased.
Belgaum
Heavy rains in Maharashtra and catchment areas of River Krishna and its tributaries submerged six low-lying bridges in Chikodi taluk on Thursday. Five of the bridges were opened for traffic only on Monday after the water level in the rivers receded. However, the inflow into the rivers increased with Maharashtra releasing 95,260 cusecs of water on Thursday.
The inflow into Tungabhadra reservoir in Hospet increased to 49,883 cusecs pushing up the water storage in the dam. The water in the reservoir is only three feet short of its maximum level. Tunghabhdra Board has said that it may release water from the dam on Friday and has asked the people on river banks not to venture into the river.
Shimoga
Heavy rain continued to lash the district on Thursday. Several roads and vast tracts of agricultural lands were submerged in Hosanagar, Thirthahalli and Sagar taluks.
Hulikal and Mastikatte received record rain of 302 mm each. Mani recorded 272 mm of rain followed by Yadur (271 mm), Hosanagar (248.2 mm) and Agumbe (244 mm).
The major rivers in Thirthahalli taluk are in spate. The road connecting Thirthahalli and Agumbe could be submerged if it continues to rain in the region. Water levels in various dams witnessed drastic rise following the copious rain.
Rains which had receded in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Chikmagalur and Kodagu districts for the last few days, gained momentum on Thursday. The Dakshina Kannada district which had witnessed soaring temperatures in the past few days, got a relief in the form of rain that began on Wednesday night.
Udupi
The Udupi district has received an average rainfall of 34.04 mm in the last 24 hours. Udupi taluk has recorded 26.12 mm of rainfall, Kundapur 32.2 mm while Karkala registered 43.8 mm.
Chikmagalur
Heavy rains lashed Chikmagalur district on Thursday. Five houses were damaged in Tarikere taluk in rain-related incidents. The agricultural activities that had gained momentum in last few days, were brought to a halt owing to the rainfall.
Kodagu
Various parts of Kodagu district including Madikeri, Bhagamandala, and Gonikoppa received heavy rains. Many electricity poles and trees were uprooted in the district
