Haveri: Following the footsteps of a few students of a college in Sullia taluk who wore saffron shawls to protest against burqa, a section of students have started doing the same in the district here.

The students, both male and female can be seen wearing saffron shawls at pre-university and degree colleges in Hirekerur and Hangal taluks.

The students wearing saffron shawls have demanded that the college authorities evolve a common dress code to all students. Even their parents seem to support them.

“We cannot dictate terms on wearing burqa or shawls. We are awaiting instructions from the government,” said the college authorities.

Earlier, the girl students of Hangal’s Sri Kumareshawar Degree College and Akkiallur Government Degree College, who attend classes in burqa, said they would discontinue their education if they are not allowed to wear burqa.

The protest began in Hirekerur and Hangal. It is now spread to Bankapur and other parts of Haveri district.
