hassan police 13042020Hassan: As many as two police officers from the Hassan district are now facing an inquiry for taking action against a BJP activist for posting something controversial on social media. The post reportedly suggested a connection between the Tablighi Jamaat meet in New Delhi and the COVID-19 outbreak in the city.

Tej Kumar Shetty, the BJP activist, was arrested by the Hassan police on Saturday for suggesting that the coronavirus was weaker than Maulana Muhammad Saad, head of Tablighi Jamaat (TJ), the organiser of the event.

According to a report by TNM a departmental inquiry of the two police officers, Belur circle inspector Siddarameshwara and Arehalli sub-inspector Balu, will be conducted by jurisdictional Superintendent of Police (SP) Srinivasa Gowda. They are also being probed for issuing statements directly to the press, something that only the unit head is authorised to do.

The officers have, however, not been suspended, SP Gowda clarified.

Action was initiated against the officers after state Tourism Minister CT Ravi raised the issue with state Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Twitter, according to the report.

It can be recalled that last week, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had warned against speaking ill about or targetting the Muslim community with regard to the Tablighi Jamaat event. Since then, several BJP members like MLAs Renukacharya, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal and MPs Shobha Karandlaje and Anantkumar Hegde have made controversial statements against the Tablighis.
