In a rather embarrassing moment, first lady Melania Trump came to the rescue of US President Donald Trump when he couldn’t recognise the gift he gave to Queen Elizabeth II.
The US President is currently visiting the United Kingdom as part of his three-day state visit to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries. However, the symbolic visit to the Buckingham Palace turned out to be an embarrassing experience for the US president.
According to The Sun, the president looked confused when the Queen showed him a statue of a horse. Moments later, the first lady pointed out that the statue was actually gifted by Trump to the Queen in 2018.
The incident was first reported by The Sun’s Royal Correspondent, Emily Andrews, on Twitter.
“Trump was also shown the pewter horse that he’d given the Queen last year in his visit to Windsor. He was asked if he recognised it and he said “no”! Melania came to his rescue and said: “I think we gave that to the Queen” she wrote on Twitter.
A report by Express.co.uk wittingly said the gift gaffe may well continue into the next Anglo-US meeting because of the fact that the Queen gifted Trump with a 1959 first edition of The Second World War by Winston Churchill and a three-piece Duofold pen set.
After the hilarious story was shared on social media, many users were quick to express their views.
One user wrote, “ “Exactly like all married couples worldwide. Wife picks a gift that both gives, husband pays no attention. I think every married couple knows this.”
“Absurd the taxpayers of America are giving @RoyalFamily more stuff. They don’t need more stuff. We should be using our money for more important things. Insane,” wrote another.
