“Tulu” is the oldest spoken language of south India, especially in the Coastal Karnataka regions. Tulu is one of the family members of the Dravidian language. A large majority of people in Dakshina Kannada, parts of Kasaragod, and Udupi District speak Tulu, irrespective of religion and caste. For the majority of these people, Tulu is their mother tongue. As per the 2011 census, there are 1.85 million Tulu-speaking people in the world. However, as per other reports, the number is estimated to be 3 to 5 million as of date.

Tulu is the most deserving language to be included in the eighth schedule of the constitution. The demand for the inclusion of the Tulu language in eight schedules has been pending for the last two decades. Many other Indian languages that have much fewer speakers than Tulu have found the favoured position, but for Tulu, it is still elusive. People from Tulunadu have etched their name not only in Karnataka and India but also at the international level. The majority of the Nationalised Banks of India originated from Tulu Nadu. This is the greatest contribution of the Tuluvas to the Indian Economy.

Tulu culture and tradition are very unique. The Bhootharadhane,  Pardana, Naga nalike are still alive and popular among younger generations too. To promote Tulu Language, culture and traditions, Tulukoota Udupi has been conducting various competitions in Tulu every year for college students at the district level. This year due to a pandemic, they have decided to organize a virtual event. The speciality this year is that it is not restricted to the Udupi district alone.
