Mangaluru: Namma Kudla’s vast and illustrious history of beauty queens has managed to accrue worldwide renown. From Aishwarya Rai to Shilpa Shetty to Freida Pinto, it seems like Mangalurean-origin women simply cannot be kept off the global stage. But the pattern seems clear: If your name is to become this city’s claim to fame, then you’d have to start small, just like 16-year-old Wencita Dias. Despite not being old enough to drive, Wencita Dias has made her hometown proud by bagging her third beauty pageant title. However, her most recently-won tiara and sash seem to mean a lot more as she has earned them while representing the entire nation.

After winning the ‘Miss Teen Karnataka – 2019’ beauty pageant, Wencita Dias bagged the title of ‘Miss Teen World Super Model-Global’ in an international competition held in Bangkok, Thailand on November 16.

The opportunity to represent India at the global pageantry stage, however, did not come easily to her. Being a part of the Fashion ABCD modeling agency, Wencita had to undergo a rigorous three-day grooming session that tested her public speaking skills, general knowledge etc. Needless to say, she was able to outperform the other models who attended this audition-cum-training session.

In a brief telephonic interview with Newskarnataka.com, Wencita spoke about her journey as a model so far. Iterating the differences between local and international beauty pageants, she said, “The pageant in Bangkok was unique and fun as I got to meet a lot of people from different Asian countries. I was able to learn a lot from the other contestants and experience different cultures.”

Having embarked on a City Tour, Wencita also expressed her delight of taking in parts of Bangkok during the pageant.

The Miss Teen World Super Model pageant comprised four rounds, namely: national costume round, swimsuit round, “celebration” round and finally, the “Crowning” during the Grand Finale. There were a total of 40 contestants in the pageant and only 16 of them got through to the finals.

When asked about her winning strategy, Wencita modestly credited her family as being the support system she needed to win all of her pageants. She also chalked up her pageant crowns to sheer hard work and dedication. “Since I was a child, I dreamt of being a model. I won my first beauty pageant when I was in the fifth standard. But my parents urged me to concentrate on studies and now, after completing the tenth standard, I have resumed my passion,” she added.

Wencita is currently a first-year PU student at St Agnes College and considers Miss World 2017 winner Manushi Chillar as her inspiration. Explaining why, she said, “I like the fact that Manushi Chillar is both a doctor and a model. Her ability to balance her career as well as modeling is admirable.”

Laying out her plans for the future, Wencita expressed that she would like to foray into the film industry after completing her education. She said, “I like acting very much. I’ll probably venture into the Sandalwood industry first and try to use it as a stepping stone to Bollywood.”

No matter what lies ahead of her, the success of teenagers likes Wencita is not only indicative of a city brimming with youthful talent, but also offers a rare glimpse of what is to come.
