mudhol police 12112020Bagalkot: The fame and acceptance for the Desi dog breed – Mudhol Hound – appears to be only increasing with more and more security agencies coming forward to induct it in their contingents.

After the Defence Forces and Forest Department, it now looks like the Karnataka Police have shown interest in inducting this breed into their Dog Squad.

The Canine Research and Information Centre (CRIC), Timmapur near Mudhol has been approached by the police department for Mudhol Hound puppies.

A couple of weeks ago, the CRIC gave four puppies to the Border Security Force and two to the Bandipur Tiger Reservoir of the Forest Department. Mudhol Hounds also serve in the Indian Armed Forces, paramilitary forces and police forces of various states.

Mahesh Akashi, the head of the CRIC said that the IGP Southern Range, Mysuru, as well as the Bagalkot Superintendent of Police, have asked for Mudhol Hound puppies.

He, however, said that the police department is yet to place an order for the puppies, since the officials have merely enquired and shown an interest in the breed.

“The police department has to place an order at the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University of Bidar, only then can we supply the puppies. The demand for this ‘Desi’ hound has increased many times over in the last couple of months. We are getting at least 20 calls a day from across the country asking about the availability of Mudhol puppies,” Akashi added.

According to sources, at present, Labradors and German Shepherds are the only dog breeds serving in the canine squads of the state police department.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned indigenous hounds including Mudhols, the state police have shown an interest in inducting them in their dog squad.

Superintendent of Police, Bagalkot, Lokesh Jagalasar said that they have approached the CRIC for Mudhol puppies.

As it is a ‘Desi’ breed and has gained popularity in the armed and various police forces, the district police is also planning to induct the Mudhol Hound into the canine squad.

“With the induction of the Mudhol hound, it will strengthen and increase the efficiency of the dog squad in the district,” he claimed.
