So you are not successful. You are feeling sad that you are not competing well enough with your peers. You feel you don’t have it in you to do well. These are common feelings and they ebb and rise with each passing day. All these feelings are brought about by how you experience the world – through which glasses do you see what’s around you. Your perception of your experience that evolves in your subconscious mind shapes your reality. But don’t despair. Never do that. Because help is always at hand – through Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLC).

From the ordinary to the extraordinary
Your subconscious mind may be limiting you, but it also has the power to unleash you, but you must unshackle it. The way to do it is, through Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). NLP is the study of the unconscious, automatic patterns, and spontaneous unconscious responses so that we can learn to change them and install new psychological programs to develop ourselves, to heal ourselves. It was created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder in California, United States, in the 1970s. It has evolved over time to become a near-exact science.

NLC is the user manual of the brain. All you have to do is read it and transform yourself. Researchers have studied the effects of our thoughts on our minds and found that they act as brakes on our inherent capacity to be happy and successful whatever that may mean to you. The NLP techniques that were discovered can be powerfully effective in changing how you experience the world. Since your thoughts and feelings shape our reality, this means that these NLP techniques can actually transform your entire life. Here is just a glimpse.

  1. Dissociation
It teaches you to witness your experience dispassionately from an observer’s / outsider’s perspective rather than your own tainted experience. Let’s say you are in a situation that seems hopeless, or you have to make a public speech and you are nervous, or you want to relate to someone, but you are feeling shy. Well, NLP helps you step away and look at each of these and other such situations from the outside. It helps you identify your emotions, and look at them as a third party – are they valid or invalid. Most times you will find they are distorted and you will find that you are able to deal with such situations in a more effective and less distressing and positive way.
  2. Content Reframing
Content Reframing is nothing but a technique to reimagine an object, subject, or a situation from a different angle. Ok, so you had a breakup. It doesn’t seem so bad if you look at it from a different angle – things you didn’t like about the relationship and the benefits of being single again and of course the valuable lessons you learned. When you look at any situation from its downside or in a negative way, it is natural to panic or be afraid – this in turn will color your decisions. Reframing helps clear your head and make decisions that are realistic and even-handed.
  3. Anchoring Yourself
Anchoring is altering your mood, behavior through cognitive repositioning of your thought process. Let’s say you are feeling low, or a particular situation annoys or makes you afraid. You can train your self, or anchor yourself to an action a thought a gesture that triggers a positive response in you. It’s not easy at first, but in time, it becomes a habit – a good habit – and gets ingrained thereby reducing the ability of your mind to react negatively to any situation. It works on the principle of neurological – stimulus-response.
  4. Getting other people to like you (Rapport)
For introverts, this may seem like an uphill task. For extroverts, not so easy either. They may even drive away people with whom they want to connect. NLP teaches you this technique called Mirroring. Mirroring another person’s body language, tone of voice, and words. But it does have to be genuine. Its simply altering your natural way to accommodate another within your space. Essentially you are making an effort, and that effort will not go unappreciated. It will help attract another to you – but you have to be subtle about it and NLP teaches you this.
  5. Influence and Persuasion
Ok, so you are now a positive feeling and looking person. You have eliminated negative emotions, limiting beliefs, bad habits, conflict, and more, but is that enough? No. if you are to be successful, you need to influence and persuade others – ethically of course. Make them believe in you, follow you, execute your commands. You may not have undergone the experience but certainly would have heard of hypnosis haven’t you? Well, that is something that is done with conscious intent – to explore another’s subconscious. But can you do that through everyday conversations – be hypnotic without being hypnotic so to say?. Milton H. Erickson thought so. He called it Conversational Hypnosis. And if you learn NLP from those well versed in it, you too can master this technique.
