Mangaluru: Most of the hospitals in Mangaluru are now glittering with green lights. The green lights are installed in order to create awareness among the general public about the need for donating organs.

With a core objective of bringing awareness among the public on organ donation, the National (Indian) Organ Donation Day is observed every year on November 27. Hence, the Indian Medical Association (IMA ) under the leadership of President Dr Sachidananda Rai and his team has organised a ‘Walkathon’ to mark the ‘National Day of Organ Donations’ at Mangala Stadium in which thousands of people participated on Sunday.

Through walkathon, they created awareness on organ donation. Besides that, hospitals in the city supported the cause by installing green lights in their premises. The campaign will last for another two days.

Many hospitals including City Hospital, Tejaswini Hospital, KMC Hospital, Unity Hospital, AJ Hospital and Research Centre, Spoorthi Polyclinic, IMA House, Father Muller Charitable Institution, Kanachur Hospital in Deralakatte among others are involved in the campaign.

8 lakh people die every year due to organ failure: Lal Goel

The Organ Receiving and Giving Awareness Network (ORGAN) India is also promoting organ donation everywhere in the nation. The chairman of Organ Donation India Foundation Lal Goel told Newskarnataka that green symbolises the concept of organ donation. Every year over 8 lakh people die due to organ failure in India. Over 1.5 lakh people die every year due to a road accident. However, less than 1000 people show interest in donating their organs. In order to create awareness among the public, it is necessary to launch various campaigns promoting organ donation”, he said.

Chief Administrative Medical Officer of Kanachur Hospital and Research Center in Deralakatte Dr. Rohan Monis told newskarnataka.com that it was to promote organ donation for those who are in need of them.

“Lakhs of people die each year because of organ failure. Such people could live to see a new day in their life if only people with healthy organs could go ahead and donate their organs”, he said.
