Mangaluru: In order to prevent illegal sand mining and transportation, Dakshina Kannada district has started a new system of booking sand through online portal and people have already started booking sand. A total of 43 orders have already been placed and as many as 18 orders have been completed.

According to this new system of getting sand through online portal, those who want sand should access online portal dksandbazaar.com and mention postal address, Aadhar number and the exact location where the sand should be delivered. Soon an OTP will be generated and sent to the mobile number of the customer. The amount for the sand should be paid through net banking or Paytm. Once the payment is made online, a message will be delivered to the mobile phone of the customer. The customer can then get the sand delivered from the nearest sand yard after showing the message.

This online portal dksandbazaar.com  has been designed under the theme, ‘From shore to every door.’ Earlier, there was no fixed price for a load of sand and the middlemen used to demand more money from the public. They even use to charge more than Rs 15,000 per load, but under this new system, the district administration has fixed price for sand at Rs 5,500 per load (10 metric tonne). If the sand is delivered within 20 km distance from sand yard, people need to pay an additional Rs 2,000 as transport charge and Rs 300 as other charges. If the distance is more than 20 kms, then the customer needs to pay an extra Rs 50 for every additional kilometres. The customer can track all the procedures of registration, vehicle booking, sand transportation through this online portal. The system is maintained by the Department of Mines and Geology.

The trucks should transport the sand as per the bookings made on the mobile app. There should not be any delay in procuring sand. If a particular lorry takes too much time to transport sand, a warning will be issued from the district administration. If the mistakes are repeated more than thrice, then such lorries would be blacklisted, sources from district administration informed.

Dakshina Kannada district Deputy Commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil informed that the system has the potential of stopping all illegalities in sand business and making sand available to public at affordable rates. The intention behind this app is to prevent the intervention of middlemen and bring transparency in sand mining activities. The app is active in the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and there is a plan to extend the same to other taluks also, he informed.
