Mangaluru: The residents of Arya Samaj Road, located in the heart of the city were elated to see the concrete road being laid. However, they were out for a rude shock because merely a month after the road work was completed, the new road has developed deep cracks, holding a mirror at the standard of work done.
The Arya Samaj Road stretch between Balmatta Petrol Pump and Kadri Road is about 100 meters long. Though half portion of this stretch has been completed, another half portion is yet to be finished.
Upgrade of this road was taken up under the Smart City project along with other roads such as Balmatta New Road, Balmatta Bridge Road, stretch between PVS and Karnataka Bank, Kadri and Milagres Cross Road at a cost of Rs 8 crore.
Sylvester D’Souza, a resident of Kadri speaking to Newskarnataka informed that it was the classic example for how the public money is wasted in the name of infrastructure development.
“If the city has to be beautified under any project, the officials concerned must make sure that the quality of work executed is up to the mark," he stressed.
The company named 'Mugrody Constructions' has undertaken this work, but the sub-standard work executed by the company requires an explanation from the contractors now.
Corporator A C Vinayraj, when contacted informed that Mugrody Construction was known for its quality work. "However, I will consult Sudhakar Shetty, the proprietor of Mugrody Constructions and inform him about the cracks on the road. I will also ask them to focus on quality while undertaking works under smart city project,” he said.
Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner Shanady Ajith Kumar Hegde when contacted informed that he would conduct spot visit soon to know the status and quality of the work.
