Mangaluru: The closing ceremony of decennial year celebrations of the Konkani spiritual monthly magazine 'Daivik Amrith' was held at Bondel church premises here on Sunday, May 22. Bishop of Mangaluru Diocese Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza presided over the function.
Addressing the gathering, the bishop lauded the dedication of Fr Andrew D'Souza, the convener of the Daivik Amrith magazine. He said, “The work done by Fr Andrew is beyond felicitations and honours. I am happy to honour Fr Andrew. The very prominent and unique achievement of Fr Andrew is presenting Christ's life through Yakshagana. No one has ever thought that this could be possible and would reach out to many people. It has become a bridge between Christians and people of other religion. Daivik Amrith has done a lot of good for the people. This magazine is not for the sake of profits, but to strengthen Christian faith though literature."
The bishop, who is celebrating 20 years of his ordination, was felicitated during the occasion.
Chief guest of the programme, President of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy, Roy Castelino after receiving the honour, said, "Nowadays, it is very difficult to run a Konkani magazine. The number of readers has come down and youngsters do not have time for Konkani. The children are being taught catechism in English and now there is a demand for English Masses. We are called Canara Konkani Christians, and so we need to keep in mind that Konkani is our identity. Our language reflects our culture and our identity. We need to create new writers and also train children in Konkani literature so that they are attracted towards the language and Daivik Amrith should take up the lead. A jatha will be arranged to reach every schools in Mangaluru to convince the students and school administrations to learn Konkani in schools as optional language".
Fr Andrew D'Souza, Editor and Manager of Daivik Amrith Santhu Omzoor and members of the editorial board were also felicitated at the occasion. The dignitaries released special issue of Daivik Amrith to mark the decennial celebrations along with a poster of verses of Bible and the book 'Moladhik Mothiyan' by Richard Alvares. The dignitaries also honoured the patrons, sponsors, advertisers, regular contributors and benefactors of the magazine.
