Ayushmann-starrer ‘Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan’ gets thumbs-up from POTUS

Washington: Ever since the Oscars, US President Donald Trump has been expressing his thoughts about movies. While he has criticised Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite”, the movie that won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards (otherwise known as the Oscars), he has given his ‘thumbs-up’ for a film that, one would image, would never have come on the President’s radar.

On Friday, February 21, President Trump retweeted Peter Tatchell’s tweet of a poster of Ayushmann Khurrana’s film “Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan”, with the caption, “India: A new #Bollywood rom-com featuring a gay romance is hoping to win over older people, following the decriminalisation of homosexuality. Hurrah!”

“Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan”, which was released on Friday, shows Khurrana as a young gay man fighting for the right to be with his partner.

Although, “Great!,” was all that the POTUS said in his retweet.

Trump is not known to be a regular advocate for gay rights and most of his supporters oppose the LGBTQ+ community.

Responding to Trump’s retweet, Tatchell, a campaigner for human rights and LGBTQ+ rights, wrote, “I hope this is the beginning of President Trump’s genuine embrace of LGBT+ rights & not just a PR stunt.”

It can be noted that the US President, his wife, first lady Melania Trump and a delegation will be arriving in India on Monday, February 24.
