Dharwad building collapse: Operation ends with 54 rescued, 19 dead

Dharwad: The six-day rescue operation at the site of building collapse in Kumareshwara Nagar ended here on Monday, March 25.

In a joint press meet held by the district administration, National Disaster Rescue Force (NDRF) and Dharwad Police, it was confirmed that 19 people had lost their lives.

The rescue operation that followed the building collapse on March 19 continued for six continuous days. The rescue teams were able to save 54 people among whom six people were rescued by the locals.

Addressing the press meet Deputy Commissioner Deepa Cholan lauded the efforts of the rescue teams.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Police Fire Services, Dr. B R Ravikanthe Gowda lauded the efforts of the fire fighters and the public who helped in the operations.

He said, “Media too has played an important role in keeping the people informed about the rescue operations.”

NDRF 10th Battalion Commandant Sh. Zahid Khan said that the number of people rescued was more than the people who lost their lives.

“The death toll could be controlled because of the public joining its hands with rescue teams”, he said.

A 750 gram silver Lord Ganesha idol which was found under the debris was handed over to the DC.

The five accused in the tragedy are in police custody and the investigation is on.

Meanwhile, the last body that was recovered from the debris was identified as that of Sahadev Salonke.

The Karnataka state Fire and Emergency Services staff, 300 personnel from State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) jointly conducted the operations.
