Dharwad: Curtains for the State Olympics Meet-2017 were brought down here on Friday evening at a glittering function with Bagalkote team emerging as team champions and Radhesh (Mysuru) and Jyoti (Bengaluru) adjudged sprinters of the meet.
Bagalkote district team garnered 13 Gold medals, 13 Silver medals and 11 Bronze medals thus lifting the team championship trophy at the third edition of State Olympics Meet.
Three new records were made in athletics with Vishwambhar standing first in men’s 800 meter and 1500 meters running race while Joylene Lobo of Bengaluru created a record in Triple jump.
On the final day, Radhesh stood first in 100-meter race by covering the distance in 10.5 seconds, followed by Vidyasagar in 10.6 seconds and Manish in 10.7 seconds.
Five percent reservation
Speaking after distributing the prizes Home minister G Parameshwar announced five percent reservation for sportspersons in appointments to the post of police personnel.
“Sports help in exploring hidden talents among rural youths. Our State already has 13 full-fledged synthetic tracks and four such new tracks would be laid in the coming days”, he said adding that new firing range would be constructed in Dharwad with the help of police department.
RDPR Minister H K Patil stressed on allocating around Rs. 50 Crore for sports activities in the state.
Youth Empowerment and Sports Minister Pramod Madhwaraj and Karnataka State Olympics Association President Govindraj K also spoke.
Transport Minister R Ramalingareddy, District In-charge Minister Vinay Kulkarni and district level officials were present.
