Mangaluru: “Due to the impact of modern digital media, there is a steady decline in the people who read literature,” opined Dr. Edward Nazareth, renowned Konkani writer.
He was speaking at a symposium on “Current status of Konkani” organised jointly by the Sandesha Foundation and Konkani Writers’ Association, Karnataka, Mangaluru on October 13 at Sandesha.
“The literature of all languages, not only Konkani,is being read less in this age. Reading literature has many benefits. Reading, particularly literary fiction, helps develop empathy in people. They are able to see the world from another person’s eyes. Literature improves concentration and also helps avoid dementia,” he explained during his talk ‘Has interest in Konkani literature declined?’
Another speaker, Wilfred Lobo, editor of “Amcho Sandhesh”, Konkani Monthly stated that the circulation of Konkani periodicals has improved over the years. He spoke about the various issues related to Konkani periodicals in the current age.
Dr. Gerald Pinto chaired the session and conducted the discussion.
On the occasion, silent tributes were paid to Walter Lasrado, Harryboy, Emmy D’Mello, Cypry Sampige, Jerry Bajjody and to Gopal Gowda – Konkani writers and activists who passed away recently.
Rev. Fr. Francis Assisi D’Almeida, director of Sandesha inaugurated the symposium and expressed full support of the Sandesha Foundation for literary activities.
