Mysuru: K.V. Sampath Kumar, 64, editor of Sudharma, the world’s only Sanskrit daily, passed away here on Wednesday June 30 due to cardiac arrest.

Sampath Kumar had taken over the mantle from his father, Pandit K.N. Varadaraja Iyengar, who had founded Sudharma in 1970, and ensured that it reached its intended audience. He was a reporter, proofreader, editor, as well as publisher.

He, along with his wife Vidushi K.S. Jayalakshmi were awarded the Padma Shri in 2020 by the government of India.

The newspaper went digital after Sampath Kumar started an e-paper.  The print edition had almost 4,000 subscribers, largely from various Sanskrit universities and institutions across India, while the digital edition has reached a larger audience.

Sampath Kumar is survived by his wife K.S. Jayalakshmi.
