We often find women celebrating motherhood as the greatest achievement of their lives. Society has made women believe that motherhood is a choice she makes everyday, to put someone else's happiness and well-being ahead of her own. Motherhood is seen through a rainbow-coloured lens of various emotions and feelings in our tradition, making it seem amazing, satisfying, and beautiful.
Unfortunately, women often find it hard to navigate through the process of developing their own identity since they are often wrapped up in the roles and responsibilities of motherhood. Most mothers spend their time trying to meet the needs of others. They forget to respect themselves in their effort to make others happy. As a result, they become depressed, unfulfilled, dissatisfied, frustrated, or sad.
But have a thought ever crossed our minds if mothers are really happy with themselves, how difficult is for them to make everyone around them happy?
Samira Gupta, a Life Coach, and Image Consultant suggests that mothers need to engage in non-negotiable self-prioritisation and to get rid of the 'mom-guilt'. Every mother must learn to fill their cup first. We must realise the fact that "no one can pour love from an empty cup, so love and take care of yourselves first, he adds.
Self-love and prioritising yourself is not at all selfish, it's a need. A mother must get rid of the burden of expectations. She should not be forced to be a superwoman. She is not obliged to sacrifices her dreams, and wishes her entire life for the sake of her family. She too has an equal right to prioritise herself and it is normal.
A woman can boost her sense of self-respect and confidence by pursuing goals, advancing in a career, traveling, focusing on health, exercising, or simply taking 'me time' to refresh her soul.
Dear mothers, there is nothing called a perfect mom or super mom instead, just try to be a happy mom. Renowned author of Two Thousand Kisses a Day: Gentle Parenting Through the Ages and Stages, L. R. Knost aptly marked that "taking care of yourself does not mean me first, It means me too."
It's high time to turn off the world and go within. Find new ways to keep your soul happy. Indulge in practices that keep you physically strong, spiritually enriched and mentally healthy. By this, a sense of elation will radiate from every cell in your body and be transmitted to your beloved family members.
