This is a very commonly asked question. A lot of people have their own doubts about counseling and psychotherapy and this is one of them. It Is true that most of the people are not familiar with a counseling process and they also are skeptical if a therapist can set things right in one go and does it requires multiple sessions!
Counseling is a process. In that process, the psychologist facilitates the client to see his/her issues from various perspectives and then look at the root cause. This process is dependent on multiple things. One is the willingness of the client; the number of details that are shared with the therapist; the circumstances that the client is in; the number of challenges that the client wants to address; the way he/she implements the suggestions or exercises that are given by the therapists; the skill of the therapist; and so on. Hence, there is no specific number in terms of how many sessions would be required.
I also understand the other source of this question. For many people, commutation is the problem. So they get worried if they have to go to the sessions so many times and it would become a hurdle in itself!
Presently, there are many psychologists who provide online consultations, including myself. Hence, the issue of commutation is resolved. Therefore, one need not worry about that.
At the same time, it is also important to understand that it is not just the number of sessions, but also the effectiveness of the sessions that matters. Hence, we need to give our 100% when we are into the session and also make sure to follow whatever is suggested.
