Evolve versus Excel

Two disciples of the same age and from a similar background were learning under a guru. The guru taught both the disciples in two different ways. For one of the disciples, Guru would always challenge by giving some extra work about which he was not aware. For example, if he knew how to add numbers Guru would ask him to multiply. If he has learned one technique, then he would be asked to learn similar techniques. But for the other disciple, he would ask him to repeat the same things that he has been doing. If the second disciple learned any new technique, then he would be asked to practice several times and restricted from learning similar techniques. Even if Both of them had given the same literature to read, the former would be asked to read similar kinds of literature once the given literature is over; the latter would be asked to read the same literature again and again.

Both the students were surprised about the discrimination that the guru was making between them. But initially, they were scared to ask him about the reason why he was doing so. The same thing continued for a long period! They didn’t dare to ask the guru for the reason behind the discrimination.

After three years of learning, one of them took the courage to ask Guru about the two different ways they were being taught! In response, the guru asked, shall we have a test for both of you?

Both of them were ready for the test! So, immediately test began. The guru asked them to sit together and then started asking questions orally.
When he went on asking, the first student was able to relate the subject with many other subjects; he could analyse issues by comparing them with other aspects and so on. He could also draw parallels. However, when deeper questions were asked on the same subject, he was not able to answer them! That is when the second student started jumping in to answer them! He had an in-depth understanding of every topic that he had studied because of which he had gained mastery over them!

That is when the guru said “now it is time for exchanging the methods for both of you. Because the first one has evolved his mind to think laterally, analytically, and understanding things by correlating them with other aspects. The latter has gone in-depth and has excelled in whatever he has learned. So next three years, both of you would interchange the methods!”

From this story, what we can understand is, when you stretch yourself to do something which is not known to you, you will evolve as a person! But you will have to stretch yourself to repeat the things, again and again, to excel in them.
