We are immersed in an alternate reality from the moment we first open our eyes. Just as most of us use social media to promote ourselves, Thousands of actors, influencers, models, and brands use social media to market themselves by building an image of perfection.
It's difficult not to notice toned models with flat stomachs, plump breasts, impossibly long legs, and perky, perfectly rounded butts.
Thousands of Instagram accounts feature photographs of women who are flawlessly sculpted. Women, in particular, have struggled with identity problems as a result of the unrealistic beauty expectations set by what they see on social media. This makes them adopt unscientific diet plans or use slimming products. Majority of them even have undergone various kinds of surgeries which has adversely affected their body.
Many people have developed severe mental health problems, identity issues, and even body dysmorphia in an attempt to meet unrealistic beauty standards. According to National Eating Disorders Association, the International No Diet Day on May 6 encourages the rejection of diet culture. This movement, started by Mary Evans Jones in 1992, celebrates the importance of body acceptance, diversity, and respect for all body shapes and sizes. The day is devoted to maintaining a healthier lifestyle, with a special emphasis on fitness of all sizes. Its aim is to educate people about how to eat well and not feel bad about indulging every now and then; to promote appreciation of how your body looks and its uniqueness, and to eliminate weight discrimination.
Nutritionist, sports consultant, psychologist Shwetha Bhatia, recognised dietician by the Indian Dietetic Association opined that "It's dangerous to aim for unrealistic body types." "Instead of focusing on a specific size or number on the scale, the emphasis should be on health and fitness," she says.
Dear Girls, Don't you think instead of running behind unrealistic perfection it is high time to make your body your best friend? Remember that beauty comes in all shapes and requires healthy body.
