Brain dead 6-year-old saves five lives

Chitradurga: The unfortunate and untimely demise of a six-year-old girl from Chitradurga has given new life to five people.

Janahvi T, was declared brain dead by doctors of a private hospital in Mangaluru, after a surgery to remove a tumor in her brain resulted in her slipping into a coma.

After Janahvi’s passing, hospital staff along with coordinators from Jeevasarthakathe, a government agency involved in facilitating organ transplants, paid her parents a visit and requested them to donate her organs.

Her parents assented to the request for Janagvi’s organs to be donated.

A nine-year-old boy from Vishakhapatnam was the recipient of the girl’s heart in a successful heart transplant procedure. Four others were received the girl’s eyes, kidneys and liver.

With this gesture, Janahvi has become one of the youngest donors.

Janahvi took ill around a month ago, when she first complained of a stomach ache and frequent giddiness. At first the girl was taken to a private hospital in Chitradurga but, when the doctors failed to diagnose her accurately, she was taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru where, after an MRI it was found that she had a brain tumour.

She was taken to Fr. Muller Hospital for surgery where her parents were informed about the risks and Janahvi’s chances of survival.

Unfortunately, fate did not smile on Janahvi as after the 14 hour surgery, she slipped into a coma and was declared brain dead.
