Chitradurga: A 75-year-old man convicted of murdering his wife, suspecting infidelity was sentenced to life imprisonment by the district and sessions court in Chitradurga within just 11 days of the crime.
Chennabasaiah, the convicted had battered his wife, Putamma, 65, to death in the wee hours of June 27, hours after few of her relatives had visited their house. He was subsequently arrested by the police on the same day on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim’s brother Nagbhushan and the inputs they got from the couple’s son, Girish. In his statement to the police, Girish mentioned that his father would frequently pick up quarrels with Putamma accusing her of cheating on him.
The trial of the case began on July 3 and on Saturday, July 7 the court awarded the life imprisonment sentence to Chennabasaiah after examining 17 witnesses, including Girish in the case. The FSL report too was submitted to the court within a day.
Speaking to reporters after the verdict in the case, Chitradurga SP Shrinivas Joshi expressed joy that justice was delivered in record time in this case. Terming this as a victory for Indian judiciary, the SP said that he was not sure if this was a record but hoped that all cases get deposed as quickly as this.
