Yenepoya conducts State level training program on common cancers for NSS Officers

Mangaluru: Cancer prevention and early detection for all populations is an important part of the mission of community service at Yenepoya University. For the past five years, the members of the National Service Scheme Yenepoya University has been active in the community through its outreach programs promoting prevention and early detection. These outreach efforts include education on the prevention of general cancers like breast and cervical cancer, oral cancer which can be detected in early stages.

The initiative for this program taken by well known Onco Surgeon Dr. M Vijayakumar Vice Chancellor of Yenepoya Deemed to be University. The  National Service Scheme unit, Department of youth empowerment and sports Govt of Karnataka and the Karnataka state law university organized a State level virtual training program on“Enhancing Knowledge & Skills of NSS Programme officers to educate the community on prevention and control of common cancers” on 30.7.2020

Dr. Rajendrakumar Kumar, NSS Programme Co-ordinator, KSLU Hubballi welcomed the participants Prof.(Dr.) P. Ishwara Bhat, Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, KSLU Hubballi in his Inaugural address said that the main causes of cancer are the addiction to alcohol and smoking and bad lifestyle. He has highlighted the importance of the prevention of Cancer.

Vice-chancellor of Yenepoya University said in his speech that Cancer prevention Outreach initiated at Yenepoya University in the year 2016.The goals are to ensure that outreach programs and efforts for educating the community of early detection of cancer and screening, cancer-related risk and prevention are rooted in identified health care needs in our surrounding communities and to increase focus on preventative care.

He mentioned that the awareness to the people is very important than the screening. Onco Surgeon briefed the objectives of our program and he said so far we have trained around 2700 NSS officers and 21,000 NSS Volunteers of Karnataka state to educate the community. Dr. Gananath Yekkar, State liaison officer, Govt of Karnataka has highlighted the role of NSS officers and volunteers to reach out to this program to the community. He has well appreciated the work done by the NSS team of Yeenepoya University.

90 program officers participated in the program through Google meet forum and YouTube link.

Dr. Rohith M, Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine YMC addressed the participants on General Cancer. Dr. Rachana Prabhu, Additional Professor, Oral Medicine and Radiology, YDC delivered a talk on oral cancer. Dr. Ashwini S Shetty Programme Coordinator, NSS Delivered a talk on Breast cancer/ Dr. Prajna Kini, Consultant, Pain & Palliative Care in Oncology, YMCH Delivered a talk on cervical cancer. At the end panel discussion was conducted with the help of expert Oncosurgeons Dr. M Vijayakumar Chief Surgical Oncologist, Dr. Rohan Shetty, Consultant Surgical Oncologist Dr. Mariam Anjum Ifthikar MCh Gynecologic Oncology, YMCH
