Mangaluru: The Department of Sociology, St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangaluru, launched “The Unspoken” on July 30 at the Sanidhya Hall. The programme is a series of open forum discussions on issues that are a taboo to speak in private or public spaces and intends to give the youth a platform to speak without being judged or being judgemental.
The Principal, Rev. Fr. Praveen Martis, SJ, inaugurated the programme by untying the ribbon from the “human lips” symbolically, to speak the unspoken. The discussion during the first of the series was on “Incest – Both Abusive and Consensual”. The panellists included Sujatha Sukumaran (Sr. Coordinator, Advocacy and Integration Support at Enfold Proactive Health Trust, Bengaluru) and Dr. Supriya Hegde (Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Fr. Mullers’ College, Mangaluru).
The programme comprised of helpful insights into the topic by the experts and an open discussion and questions from the students.
The students were also asked to put sensitive queries into the unspoken box anonymously, which was later discussed and answered by the experts.
The programme was attended by students and staff across various disciplines from the under-graduate and postgraduate cources of the college.
