Mangaluru: The relief intervention team under Disaster Management Cell of School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya collected and distributed relief material to 118 flood-affected families of Singlapur Bangle Village of Gokak Taluk, Belgavi. They were assisted in the distribution by the Deeksha Trust, Dharwad. The families who had lost their houses during the flood (partially and fully) were given a special package of relief materials.
The relief intervention team left Mangaluru for Belagavi, Karnataka, with the relief material collected from the public on 1.9.2019 and returned on 7.9.2019. Ms. Juliet C. J, Principal, Roshni Nilaya flagged off the team at the start of its journey. The team consisted of three faculty volunteers Mr.Chongtham Odessey Singh (Coordinator, Disaster Management Cell, School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya), Dr.Sebastin K V and Mr.Balaji Narayan B and seven student volunteers – Fr.Francis Pinto SJ, Mr. Mohammed Umar Khan, Mr. Yusuf Rizwan, Mr. Anil Pinto, Mr. Sagar D, Mr. Sanvith Dias, Mr. Akshay D’silva.
The distribution started at 7 pm on 3 September 2019 at the Anganwadi Centre of Singlapur Bangle Village. The families who benefitted from this effort expressed their gratitude and blessings by affixing their colourful thumb impressions/signatures on a chart paper for the donors and all those who contributed to making this effort a success.
On 4th and 5th September 2019, the faculty and the student volunteers of (Disaster Management Cell) School of Social Work, Roshni Nilaya along with the staff volunteers of Deeksha Trust, Dharwad, collected data about the village and the floods using the Participatory Rural Appraisal approach. Social Mapping was done in Singlapur Bangle Village. Focused group discussions were conducted in 3 villages namely Singlapur Bangle Village, Singlapur village and Singlapur Takke village to understand:
- The sequence of the flood.
- The consequences of the flood.
- The current needs of the villagers specifically of those who have lost their houses completely in the flood.
7 cases were also developed from out of those families whose houses have been completely destroyed by the floods through in-depth interviews and observation using a case study approach. A detailed report is being developed on the basis of the data collected. This will be submitted to the concerned government offices and other non-governmental bodies who might be able to help the villages further.
The study revealed that the top priority of the people in these villages is the reconstruction of their houses.
