NITK holds first International Conference on Power Electronics, ‘PETPES 20’

Mangaluru: A three-day international conference, on power electronics application and technology in the present energy scenario, PETPES 2019 was conducted by the by Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the National Institute of Technology (NITK) Surathkal. It was the first of its kind in the campus of the NITK

The organizers received 114 papers from across the country; after a review by 100 prominent reviewers, 50 outstanding papers with original research were shortlisted for the conference; subsequently, 41 papers were registered and categorized into 6 sessions. 6 papers were selected for the best paper award from each track.

The first day of the three day conference saw its inaugural with the Chief Guests, Dr. Akshay Kumar Rathore (Concordia University Montreal QC Canada), Dr. Uma Maheshwara Rao (Director of NITK) and guest of honor Prof. Panduranga Vittal K (Dean alumni affairs and institutional relations, NITK), Prof Manohara Pai M M (chair, IEEE MSS) inaugurating the conference and releasing the conference proceedings. Later, a keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Akshay Kumar Rathore on High frequency pulsating three-phase inverters. A Workshop on Design and implementation of Power converters with Simulink was conducted by MathWorks.

On Day 2, Dr. Frede Blaabjerg delivered the keynote lecture through Video conferencing on the topic “Power Electronics — the key technology for grid integration”. Subsequently, the conference saw paper presentations on the topic of “Power Converters” with the session chaired by Dr. Jeevanand Sheshadrinath and co-chaired by Dr. A. Karthikeyan. There was a parallel session on “power quality and reliability” with Dr. Jayaprakash P as the session chair and Dr. Y. Suresh as the co-chair. In the noon on day 2, Dr.Jevanand Seshadrinath delivered a lecture on “Various condition monitoring techniques for electrical machines” followed by parallel sessions on “transportation electrification and energy storage” with Dr. Sabharaj Arya in the chair, and Dr. Krishnan CMC as co-chair; A session on “Renewable and sustainable energy” was conducted parallelly with Anil Nayak as session chair and Dr. Tukaram Moger as co-chair of the session.

Day 3 of the conference started with a keynote by Shri. Chandrasekhar V. from CDAC, Trivandrum on e-mobility. Subsequently, delegates made paper presentations on “Smart and microgrid technologies” with Mr. Navneet Diwakar, as session chair and Dr. Yeshwanth Kashyap as co-chair; a simultaneous paper presentation session on “Industrial electric drives” was also held with Chandrasekhar V., as session chair and Dr. Jora M. Gonda as co-chair. This was followed by a keynote address by Dr. Gayadhar Panda on Research Aspects in the Domain of Renewable Energy System Integration.

This conference was financially supported by TEQIP-III, as the conference’s golden sponsor; BOSCH as silver sponsors and Dyna fusion, OPAL-RT as society sponsors; IEEE -Mangalore subsection, IEEE- IAS, IEEE-NITK, CDAC and Mathworks as technical sponsors.

The three days conference created a platform for researchers from academia and industry to interact and discover innovations in the field of power electronics, renewable energy, and electrical vehicles.
