Birth anniversary of Nobel laureates celebrated at Univ. College Mangaluru

Mangalore: The Eco club and Innovation Club of University College Mangaluru, here on Sunday organised a webinar on “Great Scientists on a Day”, to mark the birth anniversary of 2 Nobel laureates and a scientist.

Association member Chethan gave an introduction to Life story of Madame Marie Curie, who discovered two basic elements: radium and polonium. She was the first Nobel laureate scientist in Physics (1903) and Chemistry department (1911) and also the first woman scientist to receive the Nobel Prize.

Ankita and Gowsiya explained that the Raman effect can help in determining chemical bonding structures, characterise materials, determine temperature, identify pharmaceutical chemicals etc.

Another forgotten Scientist Lise Meitner, who was part of a team that discovered nuclear fission and discovered a new radioactive element called Protactinium too remembered on the occasion. She was nominated for Nobel award for 19 times in Chemistry and 29 times in Physics but missed.

Innovation Club Co-ordinator Dr. Siddaraju M.N. spoke about “Radium girls”, which is important also because of labour rights movement. He also mentioned that “World Radiography Day” is celebrated on November 8, which marks the anniversary of the discovery of X-ray by Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895.

The program started with a divine prayer by Vaishnavi, followed by welcome note from Pallavi, moderated by Pooja and Vedashini and ended with a vote of thanks by Saloni. Innovation Club member Gopal has painted a portrait of Sir. CV Raman on his Birth anniversary.
