bandhan bank finalMumbai: The Business Standard Banker of the Year for 2018-19 is Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, founder, Managing Director (MD), and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Kolkata based Bandhan Bank.

It is only four years after he turned his microfinance institution into a scheduled corporation bank. The jury consisting of former RBI deputy governor S S Mundra, former State Bank of India chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya, Vice Chairman and CEO of Housing Development Finance Corporation Keki Mistry, Ican Investment Advisors Chairman Anil Singhvi, and Saurabh Mukherjea, chief investment officer and founder of Marcellus Investment Managers.

The impressive all-round performance of the bank, the best ratios, the highest return on assets 4.25 per cent, the lowest cost structure (Cost to income ratio 0.32) attracted a unanimous decision in his favour.

Only banks with asset size of above Rs 50,000 crores as on Mar 2019, and showing growth in profit before provisioning were picked up for evaluation and three finally shortlisted. Out of these however it was a real horse race between Bandhan bank and one more bank that could have ended in a real tie, but a 42 per cent growth in loans, a deposits growth of 53 per cent, containment of the net Non Performing Assets Ratio NPA at 0.58 and a net interest margin of 8,96 per cent took the decision in favour of Bandhan Bank.

Chandra Shekar Ghosh was particularly appreciated by the jury for deep knowledge of lending, tough negotiating, personal touch with the customers leading to a growth trajectory way above the competition.

The net profit of the bank at Rs 1,952 crores at the year ending March 2019 was 45 per cent above the previous year.
