Vijayapura: Reiterating that the BJP Government will bring in a law to prevent the slaughter of cows, Minister for Animal Husbandry, Hajj and Wakf, Prabhu Chavan said that he plans to submit details regarding the same in the upcoming Assembly session.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, he made it clear that the government is not in a hurry to bring the law as a committee headed by officials of the department has been constituted to study all aspects of the law before its implementation.

“A team headed by the Commissioner of Animal Husbandry Department has been constituted and has been tasked with studying the law, which has already been implemented in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. Discussions will also be held with other stakeholders such as farmers, to enact the law. We will surely bring enact the law, but not in haste,” the Minister asserted.

Earlier, he informed that a high-tech slaughterhouse is being built at a cost of Rs 44 crores on a 20-acre piece of land in the Sira taluk of the Tumakuru district, and claimed that the building will be inaugurated soon.

Vacancies in Animal Husbandry Department

Acknowledging that the department is facing a shortage of staff, Chavan said that while the sanctioned posts are around 18,000, the department is presently functioning with only around 9,000 staffers, which is half of the total sanctioned posts.

Responding to a query about the vacancies, he said that he has spoken to Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa regarding the issue and assured that the vacant posts will be filled soon.

Irregularity in visits from vets

Admitting that cattle owners are regularly complaining about doctors not visiting the villages to provide treatment to the livestock, Chavan said that he has planned to set up a help centre for farmers to call and register a complaint.

“The centre will receive calls from farmers and after their address is collected, the complaint will be forwarded to the respective veterinary doctor of the area. The doctor should make a record after the visit for any future verification of the same,” he said.

The plan, he admitted, however, is in the nascent stage.

Construction of Hajj houses

About the demand for the construction of Hajj houses in different districts, the Minister said that so far, apart from Bengaluru, a Hajj house has been granted for Mangaluru. Based on the need and availability of land, more houses will be granted.

Regarding the demand to increase the quota for Hajj pilgrims in the state, he said that he would speak to the Central Government.

MLA Somanagouda Patil Sasnur was also present.
